"The Best Pot Roast Ever"

I love making pot roast. It's so easy that even I don't mess it up. Usually. And there are lots of great ways to make it. Sooo, when I saw this recipe, claiming to be "the best pot roast ever," I had to find out if this was true. The recipe was super easy:

What you need:
  • 2-5 pound pot roast (any kind)
  • 1 envelope ranch dressing (dried)
  • 1 envelope Italian dressing
  • 1 envelope brown gravy mix
  • Potatoes and Carrots
  • 1 to 1-1/2 cup water
What you do:
  1. If you wanted carrots and potatoes in your CrockPot, cut them to your liking and put in the bottom of your CrockPot.
  2. Put Roast on top of vegatables.
  3. Sprinkle all 3 spice envelopes on top.
  4. Add the water.
  5. Cook on LOW for 6-10 hours until tender and veggies cooked through.
I love eating crock pot roast on Sundays because it's just so convenient to prepare it before church and then come home to a meal that's pretty much ready. Plus, it makes the house smell delicious. I always associate the smell of an awesome pot roast with Sundays. Anyway, I made this roast (yes, on a Sunday) and was prepared to have a new favorite pot roast recipe. Instead, I got a new favorite potato recipe. I found that the dry ranch dressing did wonders to the potatoes and carrots, but the actual meat was pretty bland. Weird, huh? I thought that maybe I just didn't put enough of the dressings on the roast, so I actually made it again a couple weeks later. Same results. I had to add lots of gravy to the roast to spruce up the flavor. So, while this recipe is pretty good, I would definitely add some spices (or at least a little S & P) to the roast if you're going to make it. (Unless, of course, you prefer bland roasts.... but I doubt you do). And if anyone makes this recipe as is and ends up with a super flavorful roast, please share your secret. In the meantime, I'm going to stick with some of my old pot roast recipes, which include lots of spices and cream of mushroom soup. I may, however, add some of that dry ranch dressing to my potatoes. Yum.
